1. Kitchen Remodel

Q: What are the steps involved in a kitchen remodel?

A: A kitchen remodel typically involves budget and schedule planning, design and selection (see our design ideas page), contractor selection, demolition, flooring if applicable, plumbing/electrical work, cabinetry installation, countertop installation, and finishing touches (handles, lights, backsplash, wallpaper, paint, etc). This is a general sequence for a kitchen remodel. Orchestrating subcontractors can be quite a task, you may want to consider hiring an interior designer and/or general contractor to help keep the project streamlined.

2. Kitchen Backsplash

Q: Why is a kitchen backsplash important

A: A kitchen backsplash protects the wall from stains and splashes while adding aesthetic appeal to the kitchen. It serves a functional purpose and visual purpose – have fun and take your time finding something you love!

3. Bathroom Remodel

Q: How much does a bathroom remodel cost on average?

A: The cost of a bathroom remodel varies widely but can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands depending on the scope of the project. A simple refresh-remodel may just include a new vanity, commode and fresh paint while a more extensive job could have natural bottom-lit quartzite slab walls, window additions or expansions, marble mosaic floors, custom cabinetry, exotic wallpaper, custom plumbing fixtures, frameless glass enclosures, a linear shower drain and multiple heads, and on and on… (I’m drooling).

4. Bathroom Floor

Q: What are the best flooring options for a bathroom?

A: Common bathroom floor options include porcelain, marble, and vinyl due to their water resistance. This choice is somewhat subjective to your intentions with the bathroom and preferences for cleaning and maintenance. Natural stone needs to be sealed at installation and again at intervals based on traffic, porcelain is extremely resilient (and there are incredible prints/glazes available) but doesn’t quite carry the elegance or individual characteristics of stone. Vinyl is the least expensive of options, both for the product and for installation, but primarily comes as wood plank which isn’t appropriate for all designs. It is a great option for commercial/high turnover spaces as it’s easy to replace!

5. Accent Wall

Q: How can I create an accent wall in my living room?

A: You can use accent tiles, paint, wallpaper, art, architectural elements, or other materials to create a focal point on one wall. Ensure the accent doesn’t overpower the focal pieces of the room (unless intended of course!). Consider colorway, textures, materials, style, lighting/angles to come up with something you’ll love coming home to.

6. Zellige

Q: What is Zellige tile and how is it used in interior design?

A: Zellige is a Moroccan tile known for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns, often used to create stunning mosaic designs. Classic zellige is a hand-cut terracotta body with beautiful translucent glazes. The nature of this product boasts glaze variation, surface and edge undulation, and irregular joint spacing – all elements of an Earthy, natural feel! Be sure to hire a knowledgeable installer as it takes experience to get it right.

7. Subway Tile

Q: Why is subway tile so popular in kitchens and bathrooms?

A: Subway tile is popular due to its timeless, clean look and versatility in various design styles. Be it half-offset, herringbone, running bond, vertical, or stacked, so many ways to add subtle flair, and with an endless variety of glazes, the possibilities are limitless!

8. Glass Tile

Q: Can glass tile be used for kitchen backsplashes?

A: Yes, glass tile is a popular choice for kitchen backsplashes due to its reflective properties and easy cleaning. Manufacturers are able to achieve bright, crisp colors with glass – perfect for that focal element of your open-concept kitchen!

9. Outdoor Kitchen

Q: What are the essential elements of an outdoor kitchen design?

A: An outdoor kitchen typically includes a grill, countertops, sink, and storage, designed for cooking and entertaining outdoors. Think of it as a rustic but functional mini version of your kitchen! Opportunity for bringing yard and garden elements in or playing off the architectural elements of your house.

10. Travertine

Q: What are the advantages of using travertine tile for flooring in my design?

A: Travertine is durable, has a timeless appearance, and works well in both indoor and outdoor settings. Being a natural material, there are tons of characters and colors available, subject to the lot and quarry it’s pulled from, to achieve the appropriate combination for your style. A cleaning and honing job brings the product to a like-new appearance in a snap! Travertine is typically easy to find replacements for, too – definitely worth considering for your flooring!
